Despite the clear regulations and restrictions placed onto domestic cleaning businesses, the Domestic Cleaning Business Network is aware that cleaners are still advertising for work and cleaning when they should not be.

The restrictions have been in force since Boxing Day, yet many cleaners in Scotland are still resorting to work as there are no automatic funding options available.

The DCBN are lobbying hard to ensure that Scottish Government recognise the hard work that cleaners do and the harsh impact of the lockdown restrictions are having.

Dundee City Council have updated their discretionary Business Support Scheme which will initially offer a one-off payment of £2000 per business.

Thanks to the hard work of the DCBN and our members, the letters, phone calls and publicity that has been generated, Dundee have included this:

    *businesses that supply goods or services to those who have been closed or restricted (eg home-based B2B businesses (caterers; events/conference organisers, bands, DJs, photographers etc.) CLEANING BUSINESSES; tradespeople; facilities management businesses, food/drink suppliers, AV companies);

    or

    * businesses who do not have business premises and are therefore ineligible for grants attached to the rates system.

This is a massive achievement to get recognised for this discretionary funding and we now need all our Scottish members to write to their local MSPs and Councillors to get this rolled out to every local council.

The Domestic Cleaning Business Network are working hard to raise awareness for the plight of Scottish Cleaners who are still excluded from all but a few essential cleans yet are not eligible for funding.

Associate Director Kelly says that, while the Scottish Government has ordered the industry to stop all work unless absolutely essential, businesses do not qualify for the strategic framework grants.

Kelly said: “The scary thing is that we are now finding that so many people in the industry are now going out to work putting themselves and others at risk.

“I am totally against this as they should not be working, but what are they meant to do? They need to put food on the table and they aren’t getting the support they need.”

The DCBN have been lobbying hard and have provided free template letters that any Scottish Cleaner can send to their local MP and these can be found here

As part of our commitment to continuously improve the image of the cleaning industry, the DCBN, in partnership with the Domestic Cleaning Academy have been providing free training to solo cleaners and cleaning business owners. Over the course of the last four nights, nearly 200 cleaners have taken part in an online training workshop covering not only how to clean safely during the Covid-19 pandemic, but also learning about the basic requirements needed to legally operate in the cleaning industry.

With 60% of the attendees having had no previous training in this area, it has demonstrated how vital the support is that the Domestic Cleaning Business Network offers. We have provided comprehensive training on COSHH, PPE, Safety Data Sheets, Waste Carriers Licenses, Professional Products, Risk Assessments as well as understanding the basics about Coronavirus and safe infection control cleaning in domestic and commercial settings.

Every session has been interactive with breakout groups and cleaners not only learning about these subjects, but forming new friendships and support networks with each other.

It was incredibly exciting to see that the research and documents that we produced right at the start of the pandemic were featured in the National Press.

The DCBN launched a free guide that any cleaning professional could download and use to ensure that they were following government guidelines as well as enhanced cleaning protocols.

All of our research and documents are part funded through our membership subscriptions so thank you to all those that support us and the progression of the industry.

Every day across the world, millions of cleaners go out to work to make the world a slightly cleaner place. With the onset of the Covid-19 global pandemic, cleaning has never been seen as bing as important as it is right now.

So today, we not only want to thank every cleaner who is out there doing their bit to fight against the pandemic, but we also want to thank our members who we know have worked incredibly hard to raise their standards and ensure that their customers and staff are in the safest (and cleanest) possible hands.
